“Looking for the Light While Sitting in the Dark: Film as Visual Parable”

Comparing several theological themes with those found in Scriptures, participants will develop a “theology of seeing,” focusing upon the divine amidst the secular. The group will watch and discuss several films, as well as film clips from such films as American Beauty; Babe; Crash; Erin Brocovich; and On the Waterfront, and come to see that these are similar to the parables Jesus told to challenge the people of his day. Although the emphasis will be upon the personal faith development of participants, various ways of using film in church will be touched upon. Participants will leave with a new or deepened vision of God and film, plus a list of over 600 films arranged according to theological categories.
