Wee Kirk Conference 2020

The Nearness of the Kingdom of God

October 19–21, 2020AdultContinuing EducationWorship
A Montreat Conference Center Event

This conference has been postponed until 2021 due to Covid-19 concerns. The health, safety, and well-being of our guests are of the utmost importance. So we have decided to postpone this conference until October 18–20, 2021. Your 2020 reservation (including the track you selected) can be automatically rolled over to 2021. Whether you wish to transfer or cancel and receive a refund, please email our Adult Conference Registrar, Susan Akduman, at susana@montreat.org by September 30 to let her know your preference.

If you would still like to enjoy the mountains this fall, Montreat invites you to visit us for a Sabbath Getaway between now and December 13th.

The Wee Kirk conference aspires to provide Christ-centered opportunities for inspiration, encouragement, and community among leaders of small membership churches so they can do the same in their congregations and regions. This year’s conference offers the following tracks:

  • Barnabas Track
  • Missional Track
  • Spiritual Formation Track
  • Retreat Track

You will select one track that will be your focus throughout the conference (see “Track Descriptions”). Everyone will be together for plenaries and worship. Participants will be housed in the Assembly Inn, however all participants taking the Barnabas track will be housed at the William Black Lodge.

The main conference begins with the first seminar on Monday at 3:00 p.m. and concludes with lunch on Wednesday. The Barnabas Track begins a day earlier on Sunday, October 18. The Spiritual Formation Track begins at 9 a.m. on Monday, October 19. Housing for Sunday night (Sunday dinner on your own) and breakfast and lunch on Monday are available if desired, for an additional $100 per couple, or $50 for an individual (additional costs are subsidized).  Please indicate preference when you register.  Dress is casual.

This conference is a “love gift” to those serving small membership congregations. The average cost per person is $380. Through the generous support of governing bodies, large churches, co-sponsors and individuals, the conference fees for actively-serving Presbyterian congregational leaders (PCUSA, ECO, EPC, PCA etc.) are reduced substantially.

On-site conference registration check-in will begin at 1 p.m. on Monday, October 19 in the Assembly Inn upper lobby. Housing check-in is available AFTER 3:00 pm on day of arrival. The main conference begins with the first seminar on Monday at 3:00 p.m. and concludes with lunch on Wednesday. The Barnabas Track begins a day earlier on Sunday, October 18. Dress is casual.

Child care is NOT available for this event.

Check out more details below, including leadership, track descriptions, accommodations, registration, and more. Be prepared to choose your track before you register.

Leadership

Track Descriptions

Barnabas Track

(limit 16 participants)

Spirituality in Mission: Christian leaders have led through extraordinary times, yet what makes this possible is less about our skills, our competence, or our theological expertise. These are helpful and needed, yet without a grounding in communion with Christ through spiritual discipline we can find ourselves short on presence, scattered by the surrounding noise, and insecure in our action. We will return to silence, scripture, and recollection as we learn (or remember) how to find presence even when the noise abounds.

Missional Track

The Small Church Goes GLOCAL: There is no doubt that we understand what it means to live in a global age, especially in these difficult days of COVID 19. The world is more connected and interdependent than ever before. But what does it mean to be GLOCAL? Does your local church have anything in common with churches in Cuba, the Middle East, or Africa? What can the global church teach us that will inform and inspire our local ministries?

In this workshop, Mark Mueller, Interim Executive Director of The Outreach Foundation, Herb Codington, and Lisa Culpepper will discuss how the small membership church, local and global can inspire one another. We will also include a sprinkle of Reformed Theology as it changes our view of the church from “a place where things happen,” to “a people sent on a mission.”

Spiritual Formation Track

Note: This track begins at 9am on Monday, October 19. You may reserve your room on Sunday night, which will include breakfast and lunch on Monday for an additional $100 per couple, or $50 for an individual (additional costs are subsidized). This option does not include dinner on Sunday.  You may also choose to arrive by 9 a.m. on Monday and not pay additional costs.

The Kingdom of God has come near to you! There are many experiences of "Kingdom nearness" in the life of every believer waiting to be harvested, processed and shared. Like in a cluster of grapes, some of these experiences are sweet; they are fondly remembered with joy. Other experiences might leave a sour taste in the mouth, perhaps needing a bit more time to ripen before they can be fully appreciated. Each one tells the believer and others a bit more about one's self, one's values, one's goals, one's beliefs and most importantly, the direction God is leading an individual. When prayerfully and intentionally remembered, reflected upon, responded to and retold, a harvest of holy worship, holy work and holy welcome results.

In the spiritual formation track at Wee Kirk this year, you will

  • learn a process for harvesting your own faith stories based on the Reformed Order of Worship
  • learn and participate in a group dynamic which focuses on active and hospitable listening
  • shape and gift your stories to increase your own spiritual passion and that of your faith community
  • develop a new way to share your faith
Retreat Track

Many people come to Montreat’s Wee Kirk Conference simply to enjoy the fellowship of other believers in the beauty of Montreat. To encourage this, we have created a special “retreat track” that includes all the worship and plenary presentations with abundant time for prayer, recreation, fellowship, and spiritual renewal.
