Montreat residents and guests continue to feel the effects of record rainfall over the past three weeks.
The impact of overnight flooding was evident around town on Wednesday morning. The Town of Montreat public works crews are already working hard to restore roads, while the conference center is assessing damage to MRA property. At present, Robert Lake Park has sustained significant damage and is closed to the public. The Montreat Campground is also closed due to the closure of Calvin Trail.
The conference center cooperates with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR) and follows assigned protocols when potential flooding is a concern. To this point the NCDENR has not contacted us, but we have been monitoring water levels in Lake Susan since yesterday afternoon. We are not concerned about the integrity of the dam. Pedestrians, however, should keep well clear of Flat Creek, as a good bit of debris continues to wash down the mountain.
More rain is expected over the next two days.
We are continuing to assess and monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. All of our usual summer activities will continue as planned.
