This Week in Montreat Summer Post #3 | 06/19/2020

Scroll to the bottom for an upcoming weekly rundown of events.

Some quick notes and general musings from Montreat in the time of COVID this week:

Our two online worship services have both been well attended, and I continue to be impressed at the team’s ability to identify, anticipate, and overcome the technical challenge of coordinating live worship in this way. Last week’s service included Matt Gaventa (preaching live from Austin, Texas), a musical performance of a keyboardist accompanying a recorded vocal from a separate location, Eric Wall dialing in from his perch in Anderson Auditorium, and Ann Laird Jones leading communion from Convocation Hall. The ability to gather together and worship across time and space is a wonder!

This Sunday we will welcome Dr. Eric Barreto, associate professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary. Eric will be joining us virtually from Princeton. Hope you can join us wherever you are.

The summer worship series relies in part on our summer offering, and we must pass the plate a little differently online, of course, than we would in the auditorium. If you’ve been attending worship and are moved to entrust us with a Sunday offering, I heartily encourage you to do so. We will continue to post a link at the conclusion of the service, and you can access it at the summer worship website as well.

In anticipation of the opening of Assembly Inn this week, please note that the Inn is opening to guests only. For the safety of our staff and guests and the public at large, the public spaces in the Inn will not be open to walk-ins and the usual visits that we would welcome under normal circumstances. (This includes public restrooms and the lobby, for example.) The Montreat Campground and the Montreat Store are also once again open for business, but again, the adjacent bathroom to the store is not in service to the public at this time.

One of our long-time summer traditions is “Pops in the Park,” for which the Montreat community gathers at Robert Lake Park to enjoy popsicles and the music of the Tarnished Brass brand. This year, that event will look very different in that members of the President’s Council will be driving around Montreat delivering popsicles… Get your icy treat! Look out for them next Sunday, June 28th, from 3-4 p.m. The route will be posted next week; if they aren’t planning to pass your home, find them elsewhere in town and get your popsicle!

Finally, there are some plans already taking shape for what will certainly be a decidedly different Fourth of July in Montreat. The Town of Montreat, nearing completion on the construction of its new town hall on Montreat Road, is inviting members of the community to walk through the new facility on July 4th. Doors will be open to the public from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for self-guided tours. Mask up and help our deserving friends on the Town staff celebrate a move that has been long in the making.

More to come!
