Hurricane Helene has left devastation throughout Western North Carolina (WNC). In the immediate aftermath of the storm, skilled rescue and recovery workers poured into the area, along with vital supplies.
As the response shifts from triage to stabilization, the community’s focus now turns to recovery and rehabilitation. Montreat Conference Center is uniquely suited to help support this effort in several key ways.
Volunteering in Montreat
Since the hurricane, the conference center has coordinated with dedicated volunteer groups for various campus tasks. While contractors and professionals handle much of the ongoing recovery work, we continue to identify specific volunteer opportunities on our campus.
If you are scheduled to come here for a retreat or event and are interested in doing some volunteer work as part of that experience, please visit the “Volunteering in Montreat” webpage. Please note that we cannot guarantee all volunteer requests can be accommodated.
Montreat Program Volunteering
Yes! There are options to volunteer and be involved within our conference programming for adults, young adults (21+), and youth. Information about these opportunities can be found on our “Get Involved” webpage.
Regional Mission Work
If you are interested in scheduling a short-term (1–3 day) volunteer experience and you already have housing, please contact the Swannanoa Grassroots Alliance or United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County.
Long–Term Recovery Opportunities
The recovery in Western North Carolina will span years, not weeks. To address this ongoing need, Montreat Conference Center is partnering with Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders to provide housing for volunteer groups doing week-long projects throughout the Swannanoa Valley and Western North Carolina. This opportunity is ideal work groups looking for a way to impact Western North Carolina. Volunteers will stay at Hickory Lodge on Montreat Conference Center’s property during their week-long service projects. These projects welcome both skilled and unskilled volunteers who are at least 16 years old (with adult supervision). Please visit their website for more information.
