From leading small groups to volunteering your time and talents to assist in planning a conference, there are many ways to get involved with Montreat youth and young adult programs.
Backhome leaders are people who bring groups to Montreat Youth or Middle School Conferences. It’s a great way to get involved in the lives of young people. You will travel with them to the conferences and walk with them through the Montreat experiences.
Backhome leaders often help plan the trip, and serve as the chaperone and support while the group is on-site. This is a really rewarding experience, but its not for the faint of heart.
Please visit the Middle School Conference Back Home Leader Info page or the Montreat Youth Conference Back Home Leader Info page for resources and necessary information to help your youth conference experience be a success.
Small Group Leaders are the lifeblood of a Montreat youth conference experience. Imagine working with a group of youth from around the country to help them bond with other youth through facilitated conversations and activities. Many of the youth will refer to this experience as having a profound difference in their lives. Each Small Group Leader follows a curriculum that is made to fit the theme of the event.
We will soon be accepting applications for Small Group Leaders. Small Group Leaders provide critical guidance for the heart of the Youth and Middle School Conferences by leading small groups (approx. 25-30 people). If you are 21 or older and can contribute some part of your summer, keep reading!
Did you know that Small Group Leaders (SGLs) receive FREE room, board, and travel, but they also expend lots of time and energy. The required training is the Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning before the conference. If you are a Back Home Leader the same week that you are selected to be an SGL, be sure you have plenty of other adults to chaperone your group and drive them up, since you will have to be here a day early! Montreat will refund your registration fee and pay a $30 “per diem” to help defray your room and board costs if you are staying with your group somewhere other than Assembly Inn, Winsborough, or Glen Rock. Better yet, come some other week of the summer so you can devote your full energy to the conference!
All Small Group Leaders must be members of congregations that are members of the World Communion of Reformed Churches (for a listing of member churches, go to www.wcrc.ch).
Applications for the 2021 Youth Conference will open some time in January 2021. Please check back then to fill out an application!

We're excited to be offering special Small Group Leader support training this year!
We plan to add supporting adult volunteers to many of our small groups. These volunteers will be trained (on Sunday afternoon) in “Mutual Invitation,” a simple practice and spiritual discipline that helps groups know one another better, and listen more closely to one another and to the Holy Spirit.
We are prepared to accept up to 90 new adults who will be support leadership to our existing small group leaders. Learn more!
Be part of the planning team for a future Montreat Youth or Middle School Conference!
