The Impact of Summer Staff

Posted on

As we near the end of the year, we are taking some time in each of our newsletters to talk about and demonstrate how Montreat Conference Center’s ministry is supported by gifts from individuals, families, churches, and other organizations. Many of Montreat’s programs are able to thrive thanks to the contributions of these donors. Montreat’s Summer Staff program is one such example which is directly supported by gifts to the Montreat Fund. Each year, Montreat hires over 100 college-aged young adults to help keep things running smoothly during the conference center’s busiest months. The Montreat Fund helps to provide them with meals, maintain their housing, and ensure that they are paid a competitive wage. All of this, and more, is possible thanks to the support of Montreat donors.

While the tangible benefits mentioned above certainly have an impact, there are many other ways that young adults are supported and transformed through the program. Summer Staff members are able to gain practical professional experience, learn new skills, and make new friends as they live in and explore Western North Carolina together. Staff spend time learning about each other and Montreat in an environment that fosters their relationships with one another.

Eva Grow, a Development Intern from 2025 reflected on her experience saying, “serving on Summer Staff at Montreat has been one of the most formative experiences of my life—spiritually, professionally, and personally. The relationships I built, the growth I experienced, and the sacred space Montreat provided all played a huge role in shaping who I am today.”

Eva is not unique in this opinion. Those who have served on Summer Staff in the past frequently return excited for new opportunities and new friendships, and new staff members are welcomed and included without hesitation. A common theme that we hear after the conclusion of the summer, and as the months and years pass post-Summer Staff, is that many friendships and connections made during the summer extend well beyond their time in the Montreat valley.

The impact of Summer Staff on the lives of those who participate cannot be overstated. Ultimately, the Summer Staff experience is made possible thanks to support from those who have either experienced this impact firsthand or understand its value and choose to support its continuation.
