This week, a construction crew is completing the demolition of three lodges – Lord Apartments, Chestnut Lodge, and Galax Lodge – that have been vacant since 2022.
As I’ve stated in this space before, the MRA Board of Directors reviewed a report last fall on the three lodges and authorized staff to move forward with demolition. Among the reasons for this decision, several board members expressed concerns about the structures’ ongoing deterioration and potential hazards. Our top priority remains providing a safe, welcoming, and well-maintained environment for all visitors and program participants. The board’s decision reflects our responsibility to uphold facility standards to ensure the long-term success of the conference center.
Additionally, given the extensive construction and repair efforts already underway to rebuild and strengthen Montreat’s infrastructure following Hurricane Helene, now is the right time to remove these structures. Montreaters recognize the need not only to rebuild but also to prepare for the future.
Once the board’s decision was announced, I was asked occasionally if the move to demolish the buildings would encounter a legal challenge from those who had taken the Town of Montreat and conference center to court in opposition to the new lodge. Demolition activity (salvage, asbestos remediation, etc.) has been occurring on the site for a while now, and our counsel notified opposing counsel that the demolition project was moving forward. No legal action has been filed to stop the planned demolition.
Over the last four years, our opponents resisted our conclusion that the buildings could not be renovated if the conference center was to accomplish its program and hospitality goals. They urged the community to protest that the lodges should be saved. Over the same time frame, Montreaters have consistently demonstrated a respect for the necessary balance of preservation and progress. With the buildings now gone, I am hopeful that the vacated site offers new opportunities for fresh evaluation and discussions.
In summary, it’s a new day in Montreat. We will continue to share updates as we are able. More to come! RD than ever.
More to come!
