Five Ways to Experience Sabbath this Spring

Posted on

This spring we are excited to once again host personal Sabbath Getaways in Assembly Inn! This special program is available from March 20 through April 30, 2026 and allows you to enjoy everything that Montreat has to offer without the hustle and bustle of a programmed event. Often described as a “thin place,” in Montreat you’ll find a peaceful and beautiful setting where you can commune with your Creator and rest your soul. If you plan a visit, you’ll find time and space for prayer, study, and Sabbath rest, while also having opportunities to explore Western North Carolina at your own pace.

As you plan your stay, we wanted to share five of our favorite ways to experience Sabbath renewal while visiting Montreat. Here’s what you can expect:

Prayer Path and Labyrinth
Located at the Walk Jones Wildlife Sanctuary, The Prayer Path is a relatively short (about 1/4 mile) walking pilgrimage that encircles the old Montreat reservoir. This beautiful area has been set aside as a place for quiet reflection, environmental learning, and meditation. We recommend it to all guests looking for a quiet place to retreat.

Stroll Elizabeth’s Path
If you’re looking for a trail that’s less of a hike and more of a leisurely walk, Elizabeth’s Path is a gentle trail running from the intersection of Lookout Road & Assembly Drive down to the gate. Perfect for a walk or run by the creek. However, please be aware that some areas of the trail are less stable following Hurricane Helene. Always traverse the path with caution.

Montreat is also home to a variety of other hiking trails for those seeking a longer or more challenging experience.

Visit Moore Center
Enjoy a scoop of ice cream at The Huckleberry, find a gift for a loved one at The Montreat Store, or simply relax in a rocking chair on the porch at Moore Center! This centrally located gathering spot is a hub of community for both locals and visitors alike.

Relax by Lake Susan
An iconic part of Montreat’s landscape, Lake Susan offers a picturesque location to relax and reflect. You will frequently find visitors walking, fishing, or even reclining in hammocks on its banks.

Lake Susan was recently renovated thanks to a grant from the State of North Carolina. This allowed for the lake to be restored following damage incurred during Hurricane Helene, preserving the beauty and ecological health of this important natural resource.

Explore Western North Carolina
In addition to the activities available on Montreat Conference Center’s campus, Western North Carolina has many other interesting places, businesses, and restaurants to explore. Nearby Black Mountain features an easily walkable downtown with a variety of charming shops and eateries. Asheville, too, is only 30 minutes away by car and is home to many art galleries, museums, shops, restaurants, and parks.

No matter how you decide to spend your Sabbath time, we know that you will come away with a greater appreciation for God’s creation and a deeper understanding of your personal faith. We hope you will take this opportunity to experience renewal in Montreat at your own pace. Click here to make a reservation.
