This month, as part of our Youth and Young Adult Takeover, we are looking at ways youth can benefit from Montreat’s wilderness spaces. There are many things to enjoy about Montreat Conference Center’s campus when you attend a youth conference. Youth spend time singing in Anderson Auditorium, playing games on Moore Center Field, and eating ice cream in The Huck, all of which are sacred in their own right! But for many of our guests, the Montreat Wilderness is where they feel God most closely. For this reason, if you plan to attend Montreat Youth Conference next summer, we highly recommend taking advantage of our sacred outdoor spaces. Not sure where to start? Here are a few of our favorite ways to explore the Montreat Wilderness during Montreat Youth Conference.
Fun on and Around Lake Susan
At the center of Montreat Conference Center’s campus sits one of our most recognizable landmarks – Lake Susan. During the summer, boats are made available for guests so that they can go on a canoe or paddle boat ride. Just look for a lifeguard near the docks at Left Bank, and you’ll be on the water in no time!
But boats aren’t the only way that you can connect with nature in this space. Throughout the year, conference center guests can walk the loop around the water’s edge, fish for trout, skip rocks, or simply sit and soak in the mountain views. There is always something to explore around Lake Susan!
Rock Hopping
A favorite Montreat pastime, rock hopping involves following Flat Creek as it winds through the heart of our campus. Children, youth, and adults, too, leap from rock to rock as the cool mountain water rushes past. We like to think of rock hopping as an activity that is both peaceful and playful. The water, stones, and rhododendrons provide a calming and reflective atmosphere, while the challenge of keeping your balance (or wading through the water) introduces an element of fun. During youth conference, many groups spend their free time exploring the creek or pausing for quite reflection along its banks. Just remember to wear sturdy shoes or sandals and be prepared to get a little wet!

Hiking Trails
Many youth groups plan a morning or afternoon hike as part of their week in Montreat, using it as a time for conversation, reflection, and community building. Beyond our main campus, you’ll find approximately 2,460 acres of pristine wilderness which is protected under a conservation easement and includes over twenty miles of hiking trails. Whether you are looking for a short walk or a full-day adventure, our trails offer something for everyone – youth conference attendees included!
One of our most popular hikes is along Lookout Trail, a moderate climb that rewards hikers with panoramic views of the valley below. However, there are many other trails for youth groups to enjoy. Both Lower Piney Trail and Elizabeth’s Path provide chances to spot wildflowers, listen to birdsong, and experience the quiet beauty that makes Montreat so special. Before you head out, be sure to stop by our nature center or visit our hiking webpage for updates and information.
No matter how you choose to spend your time outdoors, the Montreat Wilderness offers endless opportunities to play, explore, and connect more deeply with creation. During Montreat Youth Conference, time spent outdoors often becomes a meaningful extension of worship – an opportunity to feel God’s presence in the stillness of the forest, the rhythm of flowing water, and the fellowship shared among friends. As you plan your visit, we invite you to step into the wilderness with an open heart and discover the sacred wonder that makes Montreat such a special place.
